Kids Don’t Always Know
Their Vision Is “Off”
Children are often unaware of imperfections in their vision.
If the whiteboard appears fuzzy, they may assume it looks normal. Eye exams not only help protect your child’s ocular health but also identify any irregularities in their vision.
Book your child’s next eye exam with us today to ensure they can see the world clearly and comfortably.
What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam
Did you know children should get their first eye exam between 6 to 9 months old?
Your child doesn’t even need to know their ABCs for their first visit to the optometrist! The earlier your child starts coming in for eye exams, the sooner we can help provide any treatment they may need for clear, comfortable vision.
During a child’s eye exam, we may use slightly different testing methods based on their age and abilities. With every exam, we test for and examine:
- Refractive errors, such as myopia
- Signs of eye disease & conditions
- Overall ocular health

Ocular Health for Educational Wealth
With 80% of learning being visual, clear vision is key for your child’s educational development. To ensure your child has the best possible learning experience, we examine several factors that impact their ocular health.
Refractive Errors
During your child’s eye exam, we look for any signs of refractive errors.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, causes objects at a close range to appear clear while objects at a distance appear blurry.
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, causes objects at a close range to appear blurry while objects at a distance appear clear.
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea (clear dome over the front of the eye) or the lens (crystalline lens inside the eye) has an asymmetrical curvature. This can cause vision at any range to appear blurry or distorted.
Refractive errors can usually be corrected with a proper prescription.
Eye Diseases & Conditions
Your optometrist will look for early signs of eye disease and conditions during your child’s eye exam. While rare, children can still develop ocular issues. Eye exams help detect warning signs early to provide proactive treatment.
Your optometrist will also look for any concerns regarding your child’s visual system. Certain conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (cross-eye) usually develop in childhood and require early treatment to be corrected.
Note: 20/20 vision does not always mean you are free from visual issues. Children can have 20/20 vision and still require treatment to help correct issues in their visual system.
Time for a Visit?
Children should get yearly eye exams from pre-school (2 – 5 years old) until they are an adult (18 – 19 years old).
If you notice changes in your child’s vision, you should bring them in as soon as possible. Some signs and symptoms of vision issues in children include:
- Squinting
- Head tilting
- Covering one eye
- Rapid blinking
- Frequently rubbing eyes
